This makes my heart so sad. Sad that any group of people can be kept so closed off from everyday reality that if there is any tiny scare, or desire to "Clean things up" there is a mass cleansing of living creatures. It is an expression of ignorance to the extreme.
The individuals responsible for the abandonment, cruelty and ignorance should be punished - though they will most likely only have their conscious and guilt to deal with...which I personally hope stays in the back of their heads forever.
